CRAM JAMS!

Tune in this week at the normal time for...

December 8, 2009

Souper Special:

We're breaking all the rules for the last show. This gets a little complicated, so read carefully.

From 10pm-11pm this Thursday, 12/10: the letter is

for: "Awwww, shucks, this is the last Alphabet Soup show." and "Auf Wiedersehen" or "Adios"

THEN. from 11-12am, in honor of the departing DJ's, we will have multiple letters:

Because, I know we've been pretty secretive about this, our names are Chelsea, Devon and Kelsey. (Ps. that fact about the letter K is definitely true.)

So grab a box of tissues, snuggle up to your laptop, and listen to Alphabet Soup: the Finale (as we know it) TONIGHT from 10-12am. If you begin to feel like your life is over or like there will be a void in your heart every Thursday night from now on, we're providing this link for use in case of an emergency. It will make you feel better, we promise.

Later skaters. It's been a pleasure blogging for you this semester.

December 6, 2009

12/3 aka Intern Takeover

I know you all think they did a fabulous job. And for the letter V:

-Madonna at the 1990 VMA's. This was her Marie Antoinette phase.
-Damien Rice at Abbey Road. Watch it.
-Another fantastic MS paint animation for Harry and the Potters. as one commenter says: this has a mgmt vibe, or maybe mgmt has a vibe of this. haaahahahhahahahaha.
-The real reason Kelsey loves the interns: they played Dashboard Confessional. And she wasn't even there!!
-Billy Joel's still got it. Honestly, I thought it was a joke when it said he performed on Conan. Where the heck was I in April?
-Anni Rossi sings and plays the violin at the same time. Succeeds at both.
-Live Sea Wolf!!

enjoy! and try to hold back your tears this week. it's our last show of the semester, and the last for Devon, Chelsea and Kelsey before they spread the AS love in Europe. Not to worry though, we'll keep you posted for Claire and Kayleigh's Cram Jams sesh. Plus, the end of fall semester 09 can only mean one thing: JANE'S COMING BACK! So everybody has that to look forward to.

Did you miss us?

Good.

Sorry it's been a while since we've updated. Here's the vidlist from 11/19. the letter O:
-Why?'s "One Rose" apparently doesn't exist as a video. Instead, "Axl Rose in Court Part 1/2" should suffice.
-"One Great City!" is apparently Toronto
-"O tannenbaum" featuring the Peanuts special. obvi.
-Pulled a little switcheroo for Discovery's "Orange Shirt". Enjoy a mash-up of "Osaka Loop Line" and 50 Cent's "Got Money"= I Got Money in Osaka. Surprisingly good.
-Oh, you've been looking for Alvin and the Chipmunks covering Hootie and the Blowfish? Don't even worry about it. We've got you covered.
-Raise your hand if you think Regina Spektor would be a baller elementary school teacher.
-Blind Pilot live in Oregon. Blind Pilot also live in Oregon. Get it? it's the same word, two different meanings.
-A cover of "O Oregon". The runner-up was Oregon Gutters Clogged After Rain.

ENJOY!

If things go well tonight

inappropriate?
i don't think so.

November 16, 2009

D-lite-full

Highlights:
-10 minutes of Robert Plant in 1970
-Avett Brothers short film created with all found footage
-the Dr. Dog video is kind of crappy quality, but the sound quality and their awesomeness makes up for it.
-just take a peek at the Bishop Allen Grrr... album cover. I think it's one of my faves of all time. Oh hang on, I'll just post it here. Save you some time:-Gwen Stefani circa her pink hair days
-Twofer: Sly and the Family Stone performing "Everyday People" AND "Dance to the Music"
-The Morning Benders acoustic at a Puma store. Don't get too excited, Puma like the shoes, not as in wild cat.
-THE creepiest Buddy Holly video you will EVER SEE. Moving still photographs. Bad idea.
-Primus' claymation version of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". Not, as apparently most people search for it, "the Devil Went Down to GEORGE". I'm not even going to touch that one.
-Bettlejuice Day-O scene. It's the best part of the movie, admit it.
-the Courtney Cox version of "Dancing in the Dark". Wait, there are more versions? Yes. There's a live clip of the Boss pulling his mother on stage to dance with him. So he's dancing in the dark......with his mother?

I'll leave you with that, soupers. Tune in on Thursday at ten for our last show before Thanksgiving break!! Thank god for those crazy turkey chemicals that will make you fall asleep before 10 pm so you won't miss us too much.

November 11, 2009

Two things:

1) the letter for tomorrow is D
2) Here's the H video playlist
-watch the of Montreal video. Actually, just watch the first 20 seconds of the of Montreal video.
-Donnie Darko montage for "Head Over Heals"
-check out the last video of Regina Spektor. seriously. do it.
-"Hold You in My Arms" by Ray LaMontagne is pretty good too.

November 3, 2009

.....to the izzo

that's an H. not a K.
we here at alphabet soup want to keep the spirit of Halloween alive with zombie letters.

catch you Thursday

T Vid List:

Highlights:
-The first four minutes of "The Nightmare Before Christmas"
-The Dirty Projectors discussing "Temecula Sunrise"
-"If you watch any of these watch this video..." of the week: "Tim, I Wish You Were a Girl"
-Ferris Bueller shaking up the Chi ("Twist and Shout")
-We played "Trouble" by Ray LaMontagne, but instead the video is his cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy". Sue me. Compare it to the Kooks cover from last week's playlist.
-Squeeze- "Tempted". As KingofAllWhites says: Look at the hot sluts in the background!!!
-Pee Wee Herman gets into trouble at a biker bar, dances to "Tequila" (at the 2:30 mark) to win all the "dudes" over.
- Ra Ra Riot performing in an attic in Syracuse, NY (upstate NY, hollaaaa)
-who knew Wheatus was popular in Germany?

Stuff Alphabet Soup Likes:

Here we have some fun videos that hit the interwebs last week, but in case you missed them, we present AS favesies Sondre Lerche, Tegan and Sara, and Vampire Weekend teaching you how to play their songs on guitar!!

Sondre Lerche: (How) "To Be Surprised"

(Tegan and Sara's) Sara Quin: "Walking with a Ghost"

(Vampire Weekend's) Ezra Koenig: "A-Punk"

October 28, 2009

Addendum to the S video playlist

Whilst sitting in gridlock traffic on Comm. Ave today on the BUS in the rain, I found this video on my ipod and couldn't believe I didn't include it as the video for "Strange Vine" by Delta Spirit.

Devon talked about La Blogotheque in a post last semester...so if you didn't then, I highly recommend you check out their site and check out vids from AS favorites. Lykke Li's "Dance Dance Dance" take away show put me in a great mood today while watching a traffic light change 12 times before the bus was able to go through the intersection.

In conclusion: traffic sucks, la blogotheque RULEZ
and here's "Strange Vine"

Delta Spirit - Strange Vine from La Blogotheque on Vimeo.

October 26, 2009

Keeping it Alphabetical on Alphabet Soup:

In the past, we haven't limited ourselves by choosing letters in order. For some reason, this semester, October in particular, we're picking letters alphabetically.

Hence, October 29th is hereby declared:And we're going to challenge ourselves this week by not being lame and picking songs that start with "The...".
Songs you won't hear include:
The Call-Backstreet Boys
The Repudiated Immortals- of Montreal
The Face that Launched 1000 Shits- Death Cab for Cutie
etc. etc. it's not really a "challenge", let's just say we're avoiding a cop out.

see you Thursday!

October 25, 2009

Spectacular S Week.

First of all: major props to Kayleigh for editing the html so that now you can in fact see the youtube box in its entirety. As a reward, we let her list her last.fm tracks to the right. Check it out to see what everyone's listening to.
Just in case you are confused, this is a playlist. There are more videos that you can skim through using the arrow buttons on either side of the youtube box or from the thumbnail list along the bottom. There is a lot more greatness, if you can imagine, past "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder.

I switched up a few things this week. One, the last song we played on air "She Moves in Her Own Way" by the Kooks has been completely replaced by the Kooks covering "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley live wandering the streets of Paris. Courtesy of La Blogotheque. It's just better.

High schoolers rock at covering the New Pornographers, lots of other people don't. The Wizard Rock MS paint video for "Save Ginny Weasley" is worth your time, too.

Also, for "Sleepyhead" by Passion Pit, there are two clips. One plain old live version for TV, another is a home video clip acoustic version with the PS 22 kids chorus and Michael Angelakos.

Special thanks to VH1 Classic for coming through in the clutch with a video for "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies.

Old Folks Review MGMT

Here's what we were just talking about on air. It's worth the watch.

via Stereogum.

October 21, 2009

The most exciting part of your week

admit it. Here's the Alphabet Soup Video Playlist: R edition.
Here arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr the highlights:
-Revolution live. No matter how good I get at Beatles RockBand, nothing beats the real thing. And I'm pretty damn good at Beatles RockBand.
-Aretha Franklin. turn up your speakers.
-Amy Winehouse + David Letterman. I decided to pick a video where you can understand what she is singing.
-There's something funny going on with "Raspberry Beret", and its not just Prince's cloud-print blazer
-Nelly featuring City Spud (?)!
-Freddie Prinze Jr. doing the dance Ursher taught his entire high school in She's All That
-Elvis Costello sabotaged (get it?) the Beasties on SNL--breaks into "Radio Radio". Get Well Soon MCA!!
-a clip of the prank that did poor Andy Bernard in. Featuring "Rockin' Robin" and a cell phone thrown into the ceiling. Ignore the arabic. In fact it's pretty FREAKING unfunny.

October 6, 2009

W Week Playlist.

Look for:
  • the Colin Firth tribute video synced with "Wild Night" by Van Morrison
  • Zooey and Joseph Gordon- Levitt's video for "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here"
  • to keep the crazy female performer kick going- Amy Winehouse live
  • Vampire Weekend performing "Walcott" with a Parisian tinge...on the streets of Paris (courtesy of La Blogotheque)
  • As promised, The Very Best and Ezra Koenig @ Le Poisson Rouge (Check out The Very Best in Boston on November 1st)
  • The Supremes.
  • Another hilarious video; of "We Didn't Start the Fire". Think of it as more of a visual history lesson.
  • Aerosmith & Run DMC- Walk This Way. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

or CLICK HERE FOR W

check back soon and/or listen in on Thursday night to hear about Ra Ra Riot's show this past Saturday.

September 28, 2009

Highlights from Regina Spektor:

Here are some amateur photographs and videos from the Regina show at the House of Blues you heard us raving about on Thursday. Little Joy opened (above). Nothing better than a good fake mustache and some good tunes before an amazing headliner.
Here's a DJ and one of our fantastic Interns (you can guess which ones) waiting patiently for Regina to start. We aren't quite sure what was going on with the girl behind us.
And here she is, the lady of the hour(s). A good time was had by all. We forgot to mention that she PLAYED THE SHOFAR during the show. The new album (Far) sounded great live, and some old favorites (Apres Moi, Ode to Divorce, Poor Little Rich Boy) were just as fabulous.

Don't forget to get your W posts ready!!
see you Thursday
-K,C,D,C and K.
!!HOLY CRAP OUR INITIALS ARE A PALINDROME. awesome.

EDIT: I know I promised videos above, but vimeo won't let me embed the player code. here's the urls if you're really interested:

September 25, 2009

hey ya'll. here's the video playlist for C week. I've noticed that the width of our blog is not big enough to hold the greatness that is your weekly dose of the Soup. I'll post the links below. Don't fret.
Highlights for the week:
-C is for CONTROVERSY/CREEPY: Natalie Portman in Carmensita/ Liv Tyler's role in her fajah's video for Crazy.
-Speaking of Crazy, Fiona Apple performs live, again circa 1997.
-the Joanna Newsom video is a different song than what we played on the show (which was Casiopeia). However, the song in the video still starts with C.
-check out the Beatles as babies in 1964 performing Can't Buy Me Love.
voila.

and here are zee links:
The Letter C (9/24)

April 23, 2009

Hold back those tears.

It's true. This Friday is Alphabet Soup's last show. We've had a good year, but it's time for us to go our separate ways.
I (Jane) will be going off to Australia in the fall.
Devon will be rocking out solo, expanding your musical knowledge.
Chelsea and Kelsey plan to have a radio show about rhymes. Not really, but it should be considered.
David will be jamming? not jamming? I'm not really sure.

We'll keep you posted on when you can tune into our delightful DJs next semester on WTBU. If you want to hear my voice though you're going to have to get skype or something because I definitely won't be streaming live on wtburadio.org or here at BU on channel 6.

For our final show, we'll be playing songs that start with the letter E for the end.

Thanks for being loyal listeners, and don't forget you can listen to alphabet soup whenever you want by downloading mp3s of all of our old shows.

Coming soon: highlights of the past year

DR. DOG on ALPHABET SOUP!

OH MY GOD, SERIOUSLY:

-Devon

March 26, 2009

Let me explain

Here's how we pick letters -- there is no system. My life motto is "I do what I want." I don't always do what I want, but on Alphabet Soup I do. We pick a letter based on how we feel the moment when we realize we need a letter for Friday. For instance, this week, Kelsey sent out a facebook message asking if we had done the letter R this semester, and we hadn't. So now I want to inform you that our letter this week is R.

Now at this moment when I realize that we'll need a letter for next Friday, April 3rd, I'll let you decide. Scroll through the blog or the facebook page and make sure we haven't used the letter yet this week. Otherwise, the choice is yours. You can have an adorable reason, but it's not necessary. In fact, a totally random selection will probably make you feel like you're the real deal Alphabet Soup DJ.

March 21, 2009

3/20 Playlist: The Letter C

Note: "Cappuccino" is definitely from the album Remind Me in 3 Days..., and not just from the Harold & Kumar soundtrack...check out the blog for the show High Fidelity this weekend for the WTBU-exclusive interview with the Knux, before their awesome set last night at BU Central.

Many thanks and much love to guest Soup DJ, Chris Tiernan, for stopping by to jam with us!

Seriously, this is brilliant.

Scrapple.tv, Stereogum informs us, has come up with the genius idea of getting members of the elderly community to review current album/single releases. The little ol' man on the right is absolutely adorable. Reminds me DISTINCTLY of my granddad. Someone, please, please buy his Girl Scout cookies! February 18, 2009

This week's letter is...

T for totally kickass...or maybe for some other reason. I prefer mine though.

February 12, 2009

Cool thing of my life, not just my week

I used to be a limewire junkie. Several events led up to me finally getting rid of it.
1. My old roommate got a scary email from BU that said something along the lines of "Delete Limewire or we will delete you."
2. The man at the apple store went ahead and deleted it for me...then I took it out of the trash and put it back on my desktop.
3. I found a new way to download music, and had more success than not. Seriously that was the worst part of limewire -- getting shitty, misnamed, recorded from the radio, not even the whole song versions of music.

And so the obsession with HypeMachine began. It can be slightly hard to navigate; so let me break it down for you. I'm not quite sure why it's black and pink. I think my computer is mad that I wanted a .jpg and not the .tiff they decided to give me. Either way, this looks pretty badass so I think it's worth keeping. So you want to search for a song or artist. Recently I searched for "lily allen" -- new cd worth listening to.

Then it will show you all the blogs that have posted a Lily Allen song. Under each blog click "read full post." That will take you straight to the blog.
Once you get to the blog you can right click the link and save the link on your computer by clicking on "Save link as..." Also you can preview all kinds of tunes by click on that little play button next to the song on hypem. They mostly only have new songs, but occassionally people post old stuff to their blogs. It can be a lot of work, but I think it's better than being told you're going to get deleted by BU or the RIAA.

Hope your life gets revolutionized too!

AND THIS WEEK'S LETTER IS...

W!

Fun Thing of the Week: BLOGOTHEQUE

This is the kind of thing we at Alphabet Soup aspire to.

Introducing (to you, at least...maybe not even to you) BLOGOTHEQUE and its TAKE-AWAY SHOWS.

BLOGOTHEQUE, started in 2004, is a French music blog that, if you can understand it, is the height of French coolness. Er...as far as we can tell, anyway. Most important, though, are their TAKEAWAY SHOWS!

This collection of video podcasts is added to every week, and the repertoire is certainly one to brag about. Here's one of the many all-star bands who've done a takeaway show in the past...this is Noah & the Whale's "Episode 1" video.

Enjoy, you procrastinators. Enjoy.

The Letter Eye

Well, Souperz, we figured ONE thing out, at least.

Here's the playlist of stuff we jammed to yesterday, on our I week. Be proud of us...actual mp3 of the show will be coming as soon as we mess around with that can of worms.

(Yes, we're aware that it's "Impossible Germany" and not "Journey.")

Stuff that happened on the show yesterday, for those of you who missed it: we talked about awful, ironic tattoos, "In-a-Godda-Da-Vida" took forever (so we cut the last three minutes), and Danielle E. Buma became our new official show stenographer! Now, if only we had saved the quotes she captured from the show...NEXT WEEK, OKAY.

And did I hear you wanted last week's playlist too? And the one before that? No? Yes, you did.

Stay tuned for next week's letter, and get your requesting brain cells a tinglin'!

Thanks, Soupers!

Wow, 10 playlists...not bad, people, not bad at all! Congratulations to Danielle! Her playlist was brought to you by democracy. She told me that she'd "like to thank the Academy and god" for her win. Thanks to everyone who submitted a playlist; we really like your style! Unfortunately, we didn't reach our goal of 15, so no "prize" yet, but trust us, there will be MORE contests...because, let's just face it, we REALLY want to give you this prize. You just have to earn it. So keep battling, soupers!

This week, we had our two new interns, Kelsey and David, for the first time! What'd you think? Should we keep 'em?

Next week, our letter will be I! Get your requests ready!

love,
devon, jane, & chicken lips

p.s. the newbies should get nicknames too, don't you think?

A New Twist...and a Challenge.

HEY SOUPERS.

Instead of posting our playlist from this week, we have a different idea. We'll tell you that next week's letter is P (for President of the US...the new one), and you post a 5-song playlist of songs starting with the letter P in a comment on this entry. Our favorite playlist will be played straight through on the show, and we'll give you an extra-special shout-out on the air.

AND if we get fifteen playlists by Friday at 4pm, we will post something truly, truly AMAZING on this blog on Friday night. Trust me...you'll want this.

SO PUT YOUR PLAYLIST INTO PRODUCTION, PEOPLE!

<3,
Devon, Jane, Chicken Lips, and New Secret Intern(s?)
